LEBANON EMERGENCY CAMPAIGN
Online Education Initiative for Displaced Children in Lebanon
We are bringing learning through WhatsApp to over 1,100 displaced children in Lebanon in response to the escalating war in Lebanon.
The past few months have been unimaginably difficult for Lebanon. Overnight, families were forced to flee their homes, leaving behind everything they knew. Schools have closed or turned to shelters, homes have been destroyed, and life as they knew it has come to a sudden halt. Over 1.2 million people, including 400,000 children, have been displaced. The air is thick with uncertainty and fear, yet amidst this challenge, one thing is clear: education cannot stop. These children need more than just shelter—they need hope, stability, and a sense of purpose.
For a child who has lost everything, learning offers a lifeline. It means continuity, hope, and a small part of their world that feels normal. Now is the time to act. We must keep these children learning, growing, and dreaming, no matter the circumstances. They are the children of Lebanon, the resilient, the children with Himam (ambition). We are calling on you to be part of this urgent mission to ensure education does not stop.
Bringing WhatsApp Learning to Thousands of Displaced Children
Jusoor is stepping up to ensure educational continuity for displaced children through building on the success of our award-winning WhatsApp-based learning initiative, Azima, that was our emergency response during COVID-19. We are now expanding our reach to help children who have lost access to schools across Lebanon with our initiative Himam هـِـمَم, where we aim to bring education to over 1,100 children as our first phase.
Using the simple, familiar platform of WhatsApp, we provide learning opportunities that are accessible even during times of displacement. This initiative allows children to continue learning core subjects like Math, Arabic, and English, as well as Personal, Social, and Health Education (PSHE). Our dedicated educators provide personalized support, ensuring that children remain engaged and motivated.
We have already reached over 650 children who started their education. Now, we are expanding this initiative to support an additional 1,100 displaced children across Lebanon, including the students of Maalak School in Akkar, Saghbine School in Bekaa, and other partner schools in Chouf and Beirut. Our focus is on reaching children in Kindergarten through Grade 2 and expanding to older students as the first phase of the initiative is secured. We know the number of students in need remains high, and we aim to provide this initiative to as many children as possible by expanding it gradually as we hit our fundraising goals. While it is unclear when this war will end, we know that the displaced families and the public schools that are being used as shelters won't be back to normal in time for the academic year of 2024-2025.
Below is a story of one of our students who was able to continue their education through our online learning program after we released it during COVID.
For over a decade, Jusoor has been providing education for displaced children, reaching more than 15,000 children. Our efforts have been recognized with numerous awards, most recently being selected as MIT Solvers in their Global Learning Challenge at the September 2024 Solve Challenge Finals, where we were honored with the GSR Foundation Prize.
