One Year On - Jusoor's High School Scholarship Makes Strides

By expanding its reach, offering comprehensive support, and addressing the students’ psychosocial well-being, our project is offering a life-changing pathway for Syrian adolescents in Lebanon.

In 2021, the devastating impact of displacement, compounded by the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, has left displaced Syrian students in Lebanon with limited access to education, shattering their educational aspirations. However, in the face of these adversities, Jusoor's High School Scholarship project has been a transformative force for many students at Tuyoor Al Amal School.

Providing a Lifeline in Times of Crisis

The High School Scholarship project was initiated, as part of our Scholarship Program, in response to the dire situation faced by Syrian students in Lebanon. These students, who had already lost years of vital learning due to the conflict in Syria, encountered numerous barriers hindering their access to education when the pandemic hit, and they were on the brink of dropout. Jusoor recognized the urgent need to provide a lifeline for these students, enabling them to continue their academic journey and prepare for their higher education.

The Inaugural Year: A Beacon of Hope

In its first phase, the High School Scholarship project supported 30 students in grades 10-12, offering financial assistance, transportation stipends, and support classes in subjects essential for the Lebanese Baccalaureate exams. The partnership between Jusoor and Tuyoor Al-Amal School in Tripoli played a pivotal role in ensuring the success of the project. Through this collaboration, the project provided a sense of stability and normalcy, lifting the burden from the students' shoulders and allowing them to focus on their studies.

Fatima, a high school scholar graduate, said

“Last year during the pandemic, we had a hard time learning due to the lack of teachers; it was very stressful, especially since we have government official exams and we needed to learn. When Jusoor partnered with the school, things went back to normal, it felt like a huge burden was lifted. And I managed to graduate, and I’m in the Lebanese University now.”

Expanding Reach and Comprehensive Support

Building on the success of the first academic year, the High School Scholarship project underwent significant developments in its second academic year, solidifying its commitment to empowering Syrian youth in Lebanon. The project expanded its reach, supporting 160 students—a fivefold increase from the previous year. This expansion allowed Jusoor to extend its impact to more individuals in need, ensuring that a more significant number of students could benefit from the transformative power of education.

Recognizing that education is not solely about academics but also encompasses the overall well-being of students, Jusoor integrated psychosocial support into the project. The inclusion of a dedicated psychosocial counselor became a vital component, addressing the mental health needs of the scholarship recipients.

Bridging the Paths Toward the Next Chapter

In the second year of the project, Jusoor extended its support beyond academic assistance. Recognizing the importance of guiding students toward their next educational chapter, the project offered university application assistance. This comprehensive approach allowed students to explore available universities, majors, and scholarship resources. By connecting students with professionals and graduates from various fields, Jusoor empowered them to make informed decisions about their future careers, ensuring their long-term success.

By the end of the 2022-2023 academic year, five students from our High School Scholarships have been awarded fully funded scholarships to pursue their Bachelor's degree at prestigious universities in Lebanon in partnership with the Institute of International Education (IIE) Odyssey.

Expanding Horizons

The impact of the High School Scholarship project extended beyond its initial location. Recognizing the need for support in different regions, the project expanded to the Bekaa Valley, bringing the same comprehensive assistance to more Syrian students.

Dreams Realized

For many students at risk of dropping out of school, Jusoor's High School Scholarship project has been a lifeline. It has empowered them to continue their education and pursue their dreams of attending university. As Fatima, a high school scholar graduate, expressed

"It's always been my dream to go to university, to make my mother proud, and be an active member of society."

Jusoor's unwavering support has made these dreams a reality, instilling hope and a sense of purpose in the hearts of these young individuals.

The impact of Jusoor's High School Scholarship project after one year is undeniably remarkable. Through this transformative project, Jusoor continues to build bridges for a brighter future, ensuring that education remains a powerful tool in the face of adversity.

Thank you to all our supporters who make our work possible. Join this community today and invest in the power of education. Together, we will create a world where all young minds have the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.
