With a mission to address Jordan’s agricultural and environmental challenges through technology, Smart Green aims to revolutionize the agricultural sector through the application of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies. By leveraging digital solutions, they aim to transform the agri-business landscape, making it more efficient, sustainable, and productive – “Grow more with less”
Founded in 2020 in Jordan by electrical engineers Salma Amayri and Mohammad Zeinati, Smart Green started by addressing Jordan’s most pressing challenge: water scarcity.
The sector consumes approximately 70% of the country's water resources, yet its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) does not exceed 3%. This imbalance highlights a critical inefficiency in resource use. Also, the reliance on traditional farming methods furthers the depletion of these vital resources, placing additional pressure on the country's already strained water supply and demanding considerable time and effort from farmers.
This is where Smart Green came in. The company provides innovative systems that provide the precisely required amounts of water and fertilizers to plants, enhancing the farm's productivity and ensuring the sustainability of resources. Moreover, it empowers farmers to manage their farms remotely, from anywhere, at any time, making farm management more accessible and efficient.
“At Smart Green, we are committed to making our solutions cost-effective for farmers, ensuring the feasibility and adoption of our technologies,” Salma Amayri says. “Our systems have proven highly effective; we have achieved up to a 30% reduction in water usage in open systems and up to a 70% reduction in closed systems, all while improving productivity.”
Learning the Ropes
As alumni of Jusoor’s Startup Roadshow 3 in 2021, the founders found the three-month incubation program inspiring and crucial for their startup’s development.
“Our participation in Jusoor Roadshow 3 was a transformative experience,” Salma Amayri says. “Over a year and a half, we benefited from mentorship and training by world-class experts who helped refine our business plan and marketing strategies. This program was instrumental in building our team's capacity and enhancing our skills as founders and innovators. It also provided us with the tools and knowledge needed to develop and expand Smart Green’s scope.”
What’s in Store for the Future
At the moment, Smart Green is focused on upgrading their technology and mobile solutions to better assist farmers as well as integrate weather conditions into their systems to optimize irrigation scheduling.
They are also expanding their reach beyond Jordan, entering markets in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Canada with their innovative and sustainable solutions.
“Our goal is to become a global leader in the agricultural sector, driving innovation and sustainability worldwide,” Salma Amayri says. “As we continue to integrate advanced technologies into our solutions, we are confident that we can make a significant impact on global agriculture, contributing to a more sustainable and prosperous future for farmers everywhere.”
Startup Roadshow 3 was implemented with support from Spark & Qatar Fund for Development. Smart Green’s SDG Climate Facility "Scaling up Water Innovation for Climate Security in Northern Jordan” project is implemented by UNDP Jordan in cooperation with the Royal Scientific Society and funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA).
